MT. VERNON —
Patrons of the C.E. Brehm Memorial Library are going to have to work a little harder to get their literary fix, starting on Nov. 16, when construction will block the main entry way.
Library Director Bill Pixley said the construction work is being done to put in a canopy and a covered entry way at the main entrance of the library.
“We’ve been planning for it for about three years now,” Pixley said. “This is part of an ongoing process of renovation and repair that we have been doing for the last three years.”
Pixley said it has been about thirty years since the library has had work done and it is time to update the facilities. The library work will also include re-carpeting and repainting the second floor.
“We redid the third floor, the children’s floor, a couple of years ago,” he said. “Last year was the meeting room and we dealt with a drainage problem. We want to do the entrance way and the second floor, hopefully this year.”
The library has also installed additional lighting in the parking lot because it would get very dark during the winter months, Pixley said.
“If a place looks run down and worn out, people don’t like to go to it,” he said, explaining the funds for the projects come from a special building fund used for construction, renovation or other projects.
During the construction on the front entrance, the library will still be open during its regular hours, Pixley said. Those who are able are asked to access the library from the old entrance on the east side of the building, which faces 7th St. Anyone who is handicapped or may have a stroller will need to use the intercom system located on the sign announcing the construction project, Pixley said. The intercom system will be located away from the construction. Staff will come out to escort those people into the building.
“People will just have to use the front door unless they can’t handle those steps,” he said.
Also, because of the construction, there will be no game day or family movie night in November. Pixley expressed his apologies for the inconvenience the construction will cause. For more information call 242-6322 and ask for Bill.
