Mt. Vernon —
Jefferson County is set to receive about $300,000 from the state of Illinois to be used for motor fuel tax standards, policies and procedures.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is providing $500 million to local agencies through the Illinois Jobs Now! capital bill program, information states.
“We got $85,000 in the first phase,” said County Board Chairman Ted Buck. “That’s a big help.”
The Jefferson County Highway Department received $85,233 on Oct. 18. The first phase of the distribution was $100 million in total across the state, according to information provided by the Highway Committee.
The funds were allotted according to the Motor Fuel Tax formula as defined by IDOT, information states. The funds must be used for motor fuel tax projects, which Jefferson County engineer Steve Schnake said includes road maintenance like oiling and chipping roads.
Jefferson County has 200 miles of road, with 125 miles of asphalt road and 75 of chip road, Schnake said.
He added that it costs about $250,000 to pave a mile of road, and that the funds the county is set to receive from the Illinois Jobs Now! program should pave about a mile and a half of road.
Buck said the extra funds could be a big help to the county and township road districts, because motor fuel tax has decreased over the years.
A comparison of the year-to-date motor fuel tax allotments shows a decrease of almost $31,000 in 2010 for the county, but an increase of $2,653 for road district motor fuel tax allotments.
Jefferson County road districts are expected to receive nearly $1.2 million in funds from the Jobs Now! program in total and received $200,713 in the first distribution.
In the first allotment, Bald Hill road district received $11,512; Blissville, $10,221; Casner, $11,766; Dodds, $10,934; Elk Prairie, $5,845; Farrington, $14,413; Field, $13,549; Grand Prairie, $14,235; McClellan, $13,267; Moores Prairie, $13,749; Mt. Vernon, $14,664; Pendleton, $13,024; Rome, $14,357; Shiloh, $13,933; Spring Garden, $9827; and Webber, $15,417.
The City of Mt. Vernon has been allotted a total of $409,018 in funds from the program.
