Books are brain candy, according to Sharon Yearwood, children’s librarian at C.E. Brehm Memorial Library, and they are the treat being offered to children on Halloween.
“We are targeting pre-school age through sixth grade reading levels and giving away free books while they last on Halloween,” Yearwood said. “Parents can bring children in and get books for treats.”
Yearwood said about $1,000 was raised from the community and the library will be able to hand out about 500 books.
“Some of the books were donated from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library,” Yearwood explained. “If the books sent out from the Imagination Library were returned undeliverable, they have donated many of those books to us. In addition, we were able to take part in a special program with Scholastic Books, called FACE, which stands for Family and Community Engagement. The program allows us to purchase books at a 40 to 80 percent discount with no shipping charges, and because we are a public library, there are no taxes added, so all the funds went to purchase books.”
According to information from Scholastic, the FACE program is an initiative started due to research that shows children do best in school and in life when they receive literacy support outside the classroom.
“This support consistently results in higher graduation rates, increased future earning potential and improved quality of life,” information from Scholastic states. “This is our commitment to helping ... improve academic performance while keeping students on track for college and career success.”
The Books for Treats will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the library. One book per child will be provided while supplies last.
