MT. VERNON — — Members of the Mt. Vernon Fall Fest Committee announced Friday plans for a Mt. Vernon Township High School all-class reunion.
Students from all classes from MVTHS along with teachers and staff will be invited to participate in weekend activities during this year's Fall Fest, scheduled Oct. 19 through 21.
"This is a concept that several people have talked about over the years," said Councilman Todd Piper, who was one of the leading advocates of last year's inaugural Fall Festival. "We talked about it last year, but we didn't have enough time. We decided this year it's time to do it with just a couple of years left with Mt. Vernon Township High School."
Piper added, "The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is going to run point on this. They're going to take the information and forward it to the committee."
Piper said the Mt. Vernon Downtown Development Corp., MVTHS, and the Jefferson County Historical Society are other groups that have expressed an interest in the reunion.
"The Historical Society feel this is a great way to extend and get the word out about the Historical Society and possibly make more contacts and provide information about historic Mt. Vernon," Piper said, adding, "We feel this could be an entire town project. We welcome community members to become involved in this venture."
Some of the events planned include a tour of the current high school campus, areas for reminiscing and visiting, special entertainment and recognition of students and faculty.
"This will be a chance for people who haven't been in town for awhile, and may have skipped their reunions. This will give visitors and entire weekend of planned events that showcases Mt. Vernon," Piper said. "It won't be for everybody, but those people who have been on the fence about visiting Mt. Vernon this will give them a chance to tour the high school and also have planned events throughout the weekend including the festival and parade."
Anyone who is interested in getting involved in plans for this event may contact the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce at 242-5725 for more information. The festival planning group needs the assistance of class reunion event planners and their lists of alumni, according to festival officials.
Piper said the reunion will not become an annual event at the Fall Fest.
"We floated this idea to a lot of people in Mt. Vernon and they think it's a great way to showcase what Mt. Vernon has to offer and having something for people to do," Piper said, adding that a similar event was held in McLeansboro this past summer with thousands of formers students and faculty attending.
