Tourney sponsors, volunteers needed

MT. VERNON — — The call for volunteers and sponsors for the Max Hoopster 3-on-3 Tourney has gone out.

"This is the newest signature event for the city," Tourism Director Bonnie Jerdon told members of the Mt. Vernon Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Board on Tuesday.

"Mt. Vernon Festivals, Inc., a non-profit group, has been formed to handle the signature events in the city, and they were formerly the Fall Fest Committee."

Mt. Vernon Festivals has teamed up with Gus Macker company to put on the event, which will be held June 7, 8 and 9 at the Times Square Mall parking lot in front of Sears. Gus Macker will provide 20 basketball courts and equipment as well as referees and support staff for the tournament, however, Jerdon said volunteers are needed.

"We're in need of volunteers, sponsors and we are recruiting teams right now," Jerdon said.

"Something that people should know is they bring people in to train us as volunteers," added Advisory Board member Kaycee Cooper. "You don't have to know anything about basketball to volunteer. People should volunteer and not worry about how much they know or don't know."

According to information about the event, the tournament is designed so than anyone can play, those with experience or no experience at all. Teams are computer matched into male and female divisions within the categories of junior, adult or top. The age, height and experience of all four team players are considered. Each team is guaranteed to play three games. The event is a double elimination tournament with a consolation bracket for what is termed the "Toilet Bowl" teams who lose their first two games.

The United Way of South Central Illinois has been chosen to benefit from the tournament. Jerdon said the cost to enter a team of four is $132.

In other business, Angela Schrum was chosen as the new chairman of the board to fill the remainder of the term vacated with the resignation of Hank Villani. The board will vote on all office holders during its annual meeting in June.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
