A group of area churches and Mission Possible Coalition will provide a community Thanksgiving dinner.
The event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Lively Stone Apostolic Church in Mt. Vernon, said Robin Dodd, Mission Possible Coalition director.
“We will of course be providing Thanksgiving dinner,” Dodd said. “The church will prepare something, and I don’t know quite what that will be.”
This is the fourth year for the event, which is organized by assistants and volunteers from Lively Stone, Mission Possible Coalition, Grace Community Church, Southtown Apostolic Church, Antioch International Assembly and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, she said.
In addition to the free Thanksgiving dinner provided by the churches and coalition, the Mission Possible Coalition will provide information to parents on community resources, as well as tips for children being successful, and positive parenting information, Dodd added.
As many as 200 people have attended the event in its four-year history, Dodd said, but it usually draws between 100 to 125 people.
“The coalition several years ago thought it would be a good idea to provide a community event that would be not only fun and interactive but beneficial for parents in the community,” she said about the event’s origins. “Local faith-based organizations liked the idea, and it turned out to be a wonderful community event. We love being able to provide something positive for the community, youth and families.”
The Mission Possible Coalition is an organization dedicated to decreasing substance use among youth in the community through education, coalition building, increased awareness and resources, and the belief that it takes an entire community to make a difference, according to information from its website, missionpossiblecoalition.org.
