MT. VERNON —
The first Fair Trade Craft Show, held by the ladies at First United Methodist Church, will make its debut on Dec. 15.
Jane McCorkle, president of the Mary Circle at the First United Methodist Church, said she first attended a fair trade show last year and thought it would be something worth introducing to the area.
“We have been serving fair trade coffee for about a year now between the services at church,” she said. “I thought it was a really good idea sending the profits back to the people who need it.”
Fair Trade items come from developing countries around the world. Many of the items are handcrafted and mostly made by women who are trying to build better lives for themselves and their families, McCorkle said. Once the items are sold, part of the money will be sent back to the people who made the items. The women’s group will receive 10 percent of the profits, which will be donated to Angels on Assignment and the New Life Family Shelter, she added.
“It’s a great deal for last minute Christmas gifts, locally,’ McCorkle said. ”We are excited to be able to have it.”
She said the items, including jewelry, baskets, purses and wallets, wall hangings and other hand crafted items, are nice items that are inexpensive. The items will be brought from fair trade stores in St. Louis and the women of the church will be volunteering their time to run the craft show. Lunch will also be sold during the craft fair, along with kettle corn, chocolate popcorn and pretzels.
The show will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 1133 Main St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend the show.
