Governor’s Home Town Award honors have once again been bestowed on the city, this time for the Woman Veteran’s Memorial.
“I think we have won six awards, but this is the first time we have been a finalist for the Governor’s Cup Award,” Mayor Mary Jane Chesley said. “That’s quite an accomplishment.”
The 30th Annual Governor’s Home Town Awards were announced Thursday, with a total of 30 Illinois communities receiving honors.
“The Governor’s Home Town Awards honor the efforts of 30 remarkable groups who have selflessly dedicated their time and efforts to making their communities a better place to live,” Quinn stated. “We applaud these groups of volunteers for improving the lives of others and truly making a difference in our state.”
Recipients of the awards are selected by volunteer judges who review and rank applications based on local need, volunteer participation, use of resources and results. The projects are judged within their population categories for divisional awards, then the top division winners are in the Governor’s Cup finals. Project categories include services and mentorship, beautification and sustainability, parks and recreation, memorials and monuments and historic preservation. The Mt. Vernon submission was in the memorials and monuments category and was a finalist for the Governor’s Cup Award.
The Governor’s Cup Award went to the FRESH Community Teaching Garden of East St. Louis.
“With this project, what I was impressed with is with the entire project, there were so many sections of the community which volunteered to help,” Chesley said. “They really liked our project a lot. They like the number of volunteers, and the activities planned as well as the ongoing interest.”
The total number of volunteers, drawn from groups associated with C.E. Brehm Memorial Library, the general community, Downtown Development Corporation, Daughters of the American Revolution, and all veterans organizations came in at 2,250 with a total of 30,500 volunteer hours to complete the project.
Chesley said other Governor’s Home Town Awards which have been presented in the city include for the World Affairs Forum, Senior Olympics, Nutrition on Weekends, the Granada Center for the Arts and the Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park.
