Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Connie Simmons swore in the first 13-member Jefferson County Board on Monday.
During the organizational meeting, board members Tommy Hayes and John Keele nominated Robert White to remain as the county board chairman; new members Jeff Williams and Randy Edwards nominated Don Rector to serve as the vice chairman. The election of White and Rector was approved by the board.
“I appreciate the opportunity to keep chairing the board,” White said. “There is a lot of change coming. Soon, we will have a SmartBoard, and in January, we will receive tablets with WiFi enabled as we continue our charge to be paperless.”
White said the board will keep moving forward with its efforts to investigate the possibilities for renovation at the courthouse, with the assistance of M360 and State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman.
Economic development is another road for opportunities for the county, White added.
“Last budget year, we started to contribute to the Jefferson County Development Corporation,” he said. “That was the first time we pledged financial support to them, and we will be investigating those options.”
White shared two guidelines he uses while serving on the county board — “To whom much is given, much is expected,” and “Treat others as you’d like to be treated,” and encouraged the rest of the board to consider each as they do the work of the county.
White thanked Rector for his service to the county, mentioning his past work as county clerk.
“We’re gonna disagree sometimes,” Rector said to the board, “But let’s don’t be disagreeable.”
The board will meet as committees of the whole for the first month of meetings, White said; committee meetings will be held the week of Dec. 10 and the full board meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 17, due to the Christmas holiday.
