MT. VERNON —
A ballot placement lottery was held Tuesday morning in the Mt. Vernon City Clerk’s office, as candidates for City Treasurer and City Council were on hand to find out whose names would receive top billing on the April 9, 2013 ballot.
Both candidates for City Treasurer — Doris Stover and Mary Jo Pemberton — filed at 8 a.m. on Nov. 19. Four candidates for two city council seats — incumbent Dennis McEnaney, Donte Moore, David Morgan and incumbent Todd Piper — filed at 8 a.m. on Nov. 19, the first day to file nominating petitions. Under state law, for those who file at the same time, a lottery is held to determine ballot placement.
Incumbent Stover’s name will appear first for the position of City Treasurer; for the city council member positions, it will be McEnaney, Moore, Morgan and Piper.
Candidates who are running unopposed for city positions in the election will be Hopkins for City Clerk and Mary Jane Chesley for Mayor.
According to Hopkins, Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Connie Simmons — who is the local election official — has been notified there will not be a need for a primary in February, and the swearing-in of the winners of the April election will be held during the first city council meeting scheduled for May 2013.
