MT. VERNON —
The 14th South Central Transit Annual Canned Food Drive was held earlier this year, but it was still a success.
SCT staff estimate more than 5,000 items were donated during the canned food drive.
This year, SCT expanded the food drive by adding five days to its span, and held it from Oct. 15 to Oct. 26 to avoid conflicting with other drives such as Scouting for Food, information states.
“With all the recent reports regarding how low the supplies were at the local food pantries, SCT felt this was a way to get a jump on helping to restock those pantry shelves,” information from a Dec. 3 press release states.
Riders from the general public, as well as shuttle riders in SCT’s six-county area, were given the opportunity to cover their transportation fees and or fares with the donation of canned goods or non-perishable items instead of cash. Items collected from each county were donated to pantries within that county.
