MT. VERNON —
The Mt. Vernon Airport Board Authority voted to accept the bid of a new insurance agency for its property and equipment needs.
Airport Manager Chris Collins said the airport received three bids, but one was disqualified because it did not meet the three-year criteria asked for, while the other two did. The winning bid was awarded to Todd Piper of Guy Wood Insurance in Mt. Vernon at $23,982 per year with a $2,500 deductible.
Chairman Mike Ancona expressed his feelings that this was the best bid for the airport and it would also save taxpayers money. About $4,000 is the estimated savings each year.
Ancona said it is doubtful premiums would go down and the insurance rates have been affected by hurricanes and other storms across the country, causing all rates to go up.
The new insurance rates will go into effect Jan. 1, 2013, Collins said.
The board also voted to approve to use Mt. Vernon Communications for its narrowbanding project and will be using Motorola equipment. The Motorola bid was the second lowest bid, but Collins said the equipment is made in Illinois and the airport already uses Motorola equipment, so it has been tested and proven.
The narrowbanding project will cost $8,498 total, with $3,741 being paid by the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport. The rest of the money will be reimbursed through government money, Collins said.
In other business, the board tabled a discussion on approving plans for Innovation Park. The architectural plans had just been received and the board had not had a chance to fully look through the completed plans.
A special meeting will be held sometime next week, Collins said, so the board can vote on the plans and move forward with the project. Tentative dates have been set, with the bidding announcement being made on Dec. 20 and the bid date set for Jan. 11.
Collins said the hopeful project closeout will be June 2013.
