There can never be too much chocolate and the Jefferson County Historical Society is doing its part to make sure everyone gets their fill at the second annual Chocolate Festival.
People will have the chance to taste cakes, cookies, candies, brownies and other treats at the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge on Thursday. There will also be a judged contest with a grand prize for the best chocolate treat and a bake sale.
JCHS Secretary Nanci Irvin said the recipe has to include chocolate in it, but does not have to be only chocolate. This year, she has received recipes for turtle cheesecake, chocolate angel food cake, red beet chocolate cake and other goodies.
The grand prize was $250 and a prize will be awarded to the top three picks in each category, said Jamie Wheeler, communications director for the Historical Society. The Chocolate Festival is a fundraiser for the Jefferson County Historical Village and all the money raised goes to general maintenance and anything else needed for the village.
“This [fundraiser] was very successful last year, it was probably on par with the chili fundraiser,” Wheeler said, explaining the chili fundraiser held in February is the biggest fundraiser for the village.
She said there is a new category added this year called the Heritage Category. Everyone who turned in a recipe also had to turn in a story behind the family recipe with it.
“It was just a tie-in, since we are a historical society,” Wheeler said.
A cook book with all the chocolate recipes was also made available after the holidays last year, Wheeler said. She said it is a unique little gift for someone who may want to try a new chocolate recipe.
Chocolate Festival and contest will be held at the Elks Lodge, 1107 Jordan from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $5 per person and includes a taste of everything. For more information call 246-0033.
