Pauline X. Hassakis, 87, of Brownsburg, Ind., formerly of Mt. Vernon, died 11:45 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Countryside Meadows Skilled Nursing in Avon, Ind.
She was born Saturday, Aug. 22, 1925, in Springfield, the daughter of Gus and Mabel (Lasados) Xamis. She married Demetrius “Jim” Hassakis on June 12, 1949, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death on July 25, 2011.
Pauline was a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and later worked as a sixth, seventh and eighth grade teacher for Rome School. She was a member of Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church in Champaign.
She is survived by two sons, Nick Hassakis of Edwardsville, Ind. and Greg Hassakis of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Connie Whitley and husband Dr. Bruce of Brownsburg, Ind. and Cathy Hicks and husband Don of Columbia, Mo.; eight grandchildren, James Whitley of Basel, Switzerland, Nicholas Whitley of London, England, Alexander Whitley of Indianapolis, Phillip Whitley and wife Casey of Indianapolis, Jamie Brackenberry and husband Eli of Kennewick, Wash., Jennifer Merrill and husband Ben of Oregon, Christina Hassakis of Boise, Idaho and Caroline Hassakis of Boise, Idaho; two stepgrandchildren, Libby Hicks of Columbia, Mo. and Robert Hicks of Columbus, Ind.; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Harry Xamis; and one sister, Effie Liringis.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Father Doug Papulis officiating. Inurnment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
There will be no visitation.
For those who wish, memorials may be given to St. Nicholas Church in St. Louis or to Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church in Champaign and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mr. Vernon, IL 62864.
