MT. VERNON — Esther M. Cahill, 82, of Mt. Vernon, died 9:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Washington County Hospital in Nashville.

She was born Friday, Nov. 22, 1929, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of John J. and Mary E. (Kuenz) Tobin. She married Walter Austin Cahill on April 14, 1954, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon; he preceded her in death on April 15, 2009.

Esther is survived by three sons, Michael Cahill and wife Christine of Urbana, Sean Cahill and wife Darcy of Collinsville and Patrick Cahill and wife Ann of Boston; three grandchildren, Tristan Cahill, Colleen Cahill and Kevin Cahill; three brothers, Jerome Tobin and wife Denise of Mt. Vernon, Frank Tobin and wife Irene of Florida and Bernard Tobin and wife Agnes of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Ellaretta Grace Aydt of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John J. Tobin Jr.; two sisters, Lucille Andrews and JoAnn Licata; and two brothers in infancy, Bennie and Pascascol Tobin.

Esther was a switchboard operator of Illinois Bell Telephone Company, was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon and a member of the Ladies Sodality of the church.

Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon with Father John Iffert officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the St. Mary Catholic Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
