Edward Glendon Shields, 88, of Tuscon, Ariz., and formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at his home in Tuscon, Ariz.
He was born Sunday, Aug. 3, 1924, in Jefferson County, to William Dewey and Ella Lee (Baldridge) Shields.
He married Viola Juanita Stone on June 19, 1944 in Traverase, Fla.
Glendon was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving our country from April 1, 1943, to Feb. 26, 1946. He later worked for the state of Illinois as chief engineer at the Mt. Vernon Tuberculosis Hospital. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 399, since Feb. 7, 1957; he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1376 of Mt. Vernon, the American Legion Post #36 of Tuscon, Ariz., Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4, Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge #755 (L.O.O.M.), Eagles Lodge of Tuscon and the Disabled American Veterans of Tuscon.
Mr. Shields is survived by his wife, Viola Juanita Shields of Tuscon, Ariz.; a son, Willard D. Shields and wife Joni of Savannah, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jamie and Zachery Shields; four great-grandchildren, Ellie, Jeremy, Wesley and Chelsea Marie Shields; a brother, Ivan Shields and Duane of Rockford; two sisters, Katheryn Hicks of Rockford and Maxine Fildes of Clay City; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His parents and one granddaughter, Shannon Marie Hill, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the funeral home.
