MT. VERNON - —
Richard Lee Caldwell, 93, former rural Fairfield resident, died at his home in Centralia on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. He was born in Wayne County on April 14, 1919, son of Harold and Savilla (Simpson) Caldwell. Richard married Martha Mae Reed on Aug. 3, 1941. His wife and son, Lee Edward Caldwell preceded him in death.
Richard is survived by his daughter, LaDonna K. Douglas and husband Lyle of Tuscola; son, Ronald G. Caldwell and wife Rose Marie of Centraliai; grandchildren, Richard Douglas and wife Brenda, Robert Douglas and wife Jennifer, Randall Douglas, Teresa Beasley and husband Jesse, Kevin Caldwell and wife Teresa, Shellena Bonham and husband Allen, Branch Caldwell, Shannon Shipley and husband Reid and Tyson Caldwell and wife Shawna; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Eva Borah, Agnes Michaels and Naomi Clevenger, all of the Fairfield area; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was employed at Airtex for 39 years before retiring and for the next 20 years, he operated a small craft shop and produce business from his home on South Route 45. He served in the Army infantry during WWII, participating in the Battle of the Bulge Campaign, and at the end of the war was involved in the liberation and transportation of the survivors of Nordhausen Concentration Camp.
Throughout his life, Richard enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Because of declining health issues, Richard and Martha moved to Centralia in 2008 to be more accessible to family. Through God's blessing, he was able to remain active and could often be seen participating in various community excursions. He most frequently could be spotted along the sidelines of his great-great-grandson's baseball and basketball games.
Services will be held at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield on Thursday with visitation starting at noon and services starting at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery with military rites at the grave site.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the Centralia Trinity Lutheran Athletic Fund.
