MT. VERNON —
Elbert “Elby” H. Banes, 61, of Ina, passed away at 2:14 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Friday, June 29, 1951, in Mt. Vernon, to Ray Oliver and Leona M. (Becker) Banes.
He married Coetta Jane Crowder on Oct. 20, 1973, in Mt. Vernon.
Elby worked as a journeyman and roofer for Shay Roofing in Millstadt and was a member of the Roofers Local #2 Union.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Banes of Ina; two sons, Charles R. Banes of Ina and Andrew Banes and wife Amber of Ina; a daughter, Amanda Garrison and husband Kevin of Woodlawn; three grandsons, Anthony, Darion and Dawson Garrison and one granddaughter expected in March; four brothers, Les H. Banes and wife Sandy of Mt. Vernon, Gene Banes and special friend Donna of Mt. Vernon, Robert L. Banes of Mt. Vernon and Michael J. Banes and wife Linda of Osceola, Mich.; three sisters, Dona J. Bishop of Claremont, Fla., Sharon K. Gamble and husband Ernie of Zellwood, Fla., and Rosemary Sinks and husband Dennis of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His parents and three brothers, Raymond, Jerry and Melvin, preceded him in death.
A funeral service for Elby will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Chapel in Woodlawn with Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
