MT. VERNON — James L. “Jim” Deaton, 83, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Marion on Sunday, June 5, 1927, a son of Paul and Lois (Lindle) Deaton. He married Mitzie Lee on June 17, 1966, in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Jimmy Bledsoe officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Deaton is survived by his wife, Mitzie Deaton of Mt. Vernon; son, Bill Deaton and wife Becky of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Sherri Wilson and husband Russell of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Brian, Blake, Scott and J. Paul Deaton, Mark Deaton and wife Michelle and Molly Wilson; sister, Sandra Jo Herren and husband Jack of Mattoon; daughter-in-law, Nancy Deaton of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and one son, Tom Deaton, preceded him in death.

Jim was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and later owned and operated Deaton Insurance & Real Estate in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon and enjoyed his grandchildren’s activities

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Logan Street Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
