John G. Hawkins, 70, passed away the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., after a brief illness.
He was born March 12, 1942, in St Louis to Gilbert Hawkins and Loretta Basden Hawkins.
John married Mary Alice Minks on July 3, 1968 in St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his father Gilbert in 1988, and mother Loretta in 2012.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; son Mark Minks and his wife Muriel of Mesa, Ariz.; and cousins Johanna Inman, Rose Garrison, Sandy Sonnenberg, Anne Basden, Janice Glee Simmons, Shirley Lee , Marjorie Degenhart, Barbara Garner, Carolyn Canestra, Norma Donoho, Gary Basden, Barry Basden, Randy Basden, Larry Basden, Bill Basden, James Hester, David Hester, Charles Hester, Ronald Hester, Larry Hester, Tommy Hensen and Owen Donoho.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in counselors-in-training from Washington University in St. Louis, and a PhD in educational psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. His career included being a high school counselor, a licensed psychologist, and a financial advisor. He was most recently employed by the State of Arizona Department of Economic Security as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. He was passionate about helping others, and cared for his mother Loretta in her later years. John had a wide range of interests. He enjoyed learning and was an avid reader. He loved outdoor activities including hiking, fishing and hunting. John recently discovered he had Jewish roots and thoroughly enjoyed being part of his local Messianic congregation at Beth Shalom.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bueler Mortuary & Chapel, 14 W. Hulet Drive, Chandler, AZ 85225. The funeral service will be held on Thuursday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. at Chandler First Assembly of God Church, 532 West Ray Road, Chandler, AZ 85225, followed by interment at Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler, Ariz. Following burial, a catered lunch will be provided at Chandler First Assembly of God Church.
