Mary A. Hampton, 81, of Opdyke, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Dean Modlin and Dora T. (Lisenby) Allour. On Oct. 3, 1954, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, she married Martin Hampton, and he survives in Opdyke.
Mrs. Hampton attended Ebenezer Grade School and graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and served as the Financial Secretary for eighteen years, from 1989 to 2007, and also worked for the Jefferson County Farm Bureau from 1948 to 1955, and Country Companies from 1973 to 1988. Mrs. Hampton was a member of ARCOM (Amateur Radio Club of Mt. Vernon), Call Sign KB9SDO, Field Director of National Campers and Hikers Association for 25 years, Charter Member of Little Egypt Road Runners Camping Club and a member of Woman's Missionary Union (WMU).
She is survived by her husband, Martin Hampton of Opdyke; two daughters, Elaine Harvill and husband Steve of Victoria, Texas and Kim Castic of Opdyke; four grandchildren, Darren Harvill and wife Sandi of Hilton, N.Y., Lauren Harvill of Houston, Texas, Travis Tate of Mt. Vernon and Jayma Pearson and husband Chris of Elk Grove Village; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Tate of Mt. Vernon and Jackson Harvill of Hilton, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, Randy Hampton; and one brother, Billie Modlin.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix with the Rev. Jack Lucas officiating. Burial will follow at Opdyke Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Opdyke Cemetery or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and will be accepted at the Osborn Funeral Home, P.O. Box 130, Dix, IL 62830.
