Harold Lowery

MT. VERNON — — Harold Franklin Lowery, 96, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Harold was born Sept. 18, 1916, in rural Bluford, a son of Percy Franklin and Bertha Mae (Terrell) Lowery. Harold first married Ella Mae (Cox) on June 13, 1940, in Dix, and she preceded him in death on May 3, 1989. He later married Emeral (Foster) Page on Nov. 11, 1989, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 2004.

Mr. Lowery served his country in the United States Army during WWII where he served as a medic in the European Theater. Harold owned and operated the Prince and Lowery Grocery and Millers Market, both in Mt. Vernon. He later owned several restaurants in Mt. Vernon including Howard's, Tasty-Freeze, Reaban's, Rusty's, The Burger Barn, Hickory Grill and The Fourth Hour. Harold later worked as a real estate developer until retirement. He was a member of the Logan Street Baptist Church, AMVETS Post 4 and American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Lowery was a resident at Green Tree Assisted Living Center. Harold was most of all a loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughter, Becky Blackward Grothoff; son, Terry M. “Smokey” Lowery and wife Kathy; granddaughter, Vanessa Shaw; grandson, Adam Blackward; twin great-grandchildren, Tori Lynne and Tanner Michael Shaw all of Mt. Vernon; step-children, K. Gordon Page and wife Patty of Dahlgren and Barbara and husband Richard Brake of Marion; seven step-grandchildren; and also one nephew and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ella Mae Lowery; second wife, Emeral Lowery; sons-in-law, Jerry Blackward and Larry Grothoff; sister, Neloise Foreman; and an infant sister, Gladys Marie Lowery.

Funeral services for Harold Lowery will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor David Schlag officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
