MT. VERNON - —
Jackie “Bill” Harris, 76, of Mt. Vernon, died at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1937, in Jefferson County, a son of Willie and Helena (Wilson) Harris. He married Ruth Ella Ackley on June 19, 1981, in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ella Harris of Mt. Vernon; four children, Ronald Dobbs and wife Susanne of Mt. Vernon, Arnetta Paradee and husband Phil of Plato, Mo., Jackie Harris Jr. and wife Shirley of Mt. Vernon, and Jimmy Harris and wife Holly of Fairfield; sister, Martha Downey of New York; and sister-in-law, Agie Harris of Woodlawn. Six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jerry, Charlie and James Harris; and one sister, Willa May Harris.
“Bill” worked at Featherstun's Appliance in Mt. Vernon, he farmed and worked at the State Game Farm and was a member of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Old Shiloh Cemetery in Jefferson County with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will be in Old Shiloh Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of the Good Samaritan and will be accepted at the funeral home.
