MT. VERNON — Dorothy Esther Gifford, age 87, of Waltonville, passed away  at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

Dorothy was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Granite City, the daughter of William Chesley and Jessie (Burton) Burgess. She married George L. Gifford on July 6, 1942, in St. Louis; he survives in Waltonville.

Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodlawn and was a charter member of the Third Baptist Church in Granite City. She was retired from Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, where she had worked as a billing clerk.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Woodlawn with the Rev. Mark Gifford officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. 

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville and on Saturday  at the First Baptist Church in Woodlawn from 10 a.m. until service time.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, George L. Gifford of Waltonville; four children, Catherine Lind of Waltonville; Karen and husband Loyd White of Sesser, the Rev Mark Gifford of Springfield and Mary and husband Dwayne Sanders of Mt. Vernon; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Chesley and Jessie (Burton) Burgess; grandson Todd J. Lind; two brothers, Vernon Floyd and Cecil Burgess; and also a great-granddaughter, Allison Narlock.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association and will be accepted at the Newell Funeral Home or may be mailed to Newell Funeral Home 505 East Main Street Waltonville, IL.
