Helen Hartley-Garrison

Helen Hartley-Garrison, 97, of Waltonville, died at 3:23 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Parkway Manor Nursing Home in Marion.

Helen was born May 21, 1914, in Waltonville, a daughter of Ben and Georgia (Shurtz) Short. She first married Floyd Hartley on May 12, 1930, in Waltonville and he preceded her in death on June 27, 1990. Helen later married Raleigh C. Garrison in April 1994; he preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 2002.

Helen was a member of the Bear Point Freewill Baptist Church in Sesser. Helen was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Helen is survived by two children, Billy Joe Hartley and wife Brenda of West Frankfort and Phyllis and husband Leroy Dees of Zeigler; one brother, Maurice Ray Schmidt and wife Freida of Woodlawn; five grandchildren, Alan Graham and wife Joyce of Sesser, Debra McGovern and husband David of Williamsburg, Va., Ronald Gene Graham and wife Deborah of Richmond, Va., Susan Richardson and husband Howard of Worden and Monica Stewart and husband Donnie of West Frankfort; thirteen great-grandchildren, Wesley Graham and special friend Heather, Elizabeth McCreery and husband Jordan, Jeremy McGovern and wife Joli, Faith Anderson and husband Ryan, Luke McGovern and wife Tiffany, James Graham and wife Whitney, Megan Graham, Rachel Graham, Jonathan Graham, Benjamin Graham, Melissa Guffey and husband Michael, Nicholas Richardson and Molly Kay Stewart; and also six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Floyd Hartley; and second husband Raleigh C. Garrison.

Funeral services for Helen Hartley Garrison will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bear Point Freewill Baptist Church in Sesser with Pastors Larry Cook and David Shores officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Bear Point Freewill Baptist Church, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
