John Elmer Hawkins, 94, of Texico, died 2:50 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born April 7, 1918, in Texico, the son of William Ira and Laura Alice (Wimberly) Hawkins. On April 24, 1944, in Tampa, Fla., he married Madge Dalby Hawkins; she preceded him in death after 67 years of wedded bliss on June 14, 2011.
Mr. Hawkins was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He volunteered for military service October 1940 and arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Dec. 5, 1940. In March 1943, he came back to the mainland for pilot training and became an engineer on a B-17. During his service, he was awarded an air medal with one cluster.
He was also a member of Panther Fork Missionary Baptist Church since 1947, and served as deacon for many years. He was a board member for the Salem South Baptist Association and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 301st Bomb Group Association. He was also a certified locksmith and collected locks.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by three sons, Rodney B. Hawkins of La Porte, Ind., Larry D. Hawkins and wife Charlotte (Fann) of Texico and Allan D. Hawkins and wife Kathy (Gillespie) of Arnold, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Patrick Bruce and wife Ronda, Jeffrey Allan and wife Heather, Allan Dale II, Larry Duane Jr. and wife Feather, Amanda Leigh Johnston and husband Michael, Timothy, Ryan Keith, Rodney Bruce Jr. and Jonathan; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Hawkins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Panther Fork Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Ashby officiating. Burial will follow at Panther Fork Cemetery and graveside military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix.
