Maurice L. Smith, 72, of Mt. Vernon, died 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Thursday, May 30, 1940, in Mt. Vernon, son of Norval and Mabel (Mooney) Smith. He married Grace Tate on May 31, 1958, in Mt. Vernon.
Maurice worked for the maintenance department of Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon and was a member of Harlan Road Church of God in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Smith of Mt. Vernon; son, Mark D. Smith and wife Debbie of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Kim Davis and husband Tim of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, Krystal, Mark, Christy, Amanda, Josh S. Josh Y. Amber, Travis and Tad; brother, Gary Smith and wife Margaret of St. Elmo; two sisters, Glenda Daggett of Fairview Heights and Darlene O’Laughlin and husband Jerry of Decatur; daughter-in-law, Susan Smith of Mt. Vernon; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Smith; and one infant brother.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn with the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
