Amanda Jewell Keef, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died 10:31 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at White Oaks Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Saturday, Nov. 11, 1922, in Mt. Vernon, daughter of Ghent Benson and Amanda Elizabeth (Wiggins) Holman. She first married John L. Wells, who preceded her in death. She later married Gene Keef, who also preceded her in death.
Jewell worked for forty years at Holman Motor Co. in Mt. Vernon as a secretary and treasurer until her retirement. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., and graduated from the University of Illinois of Champaign-Urbana in 1944. While at U of I, she was in the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She loved her flower garden and dancing.
She is survived by daughter, Ginger Kay Wheeler and husband Steve of Boyd; son, Rick B. Wells and wife Sharon of Missouri; four grandchildren, Jason Wheeler, LaDawn Wheeler, Kelly Wells and Eric Wells; three great-grandchildren; brother, G. B. Holman, Jr. and wife Barbara of Mt. Vernon; two nephews, G. B. Holman II of Arizona and William Holman of California; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and one nephew, Robert Burt Holman.
In honor of Jewell’s wishes, her body will be donated to science at Southern Illinois University and no services will be held.
For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
