Mary Alice (Mills) Pierce, 85, of rural Bluford, died 6:35 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Residential Living Center in Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Pierce was born on Dec. 3, 1927, in rural Waltonville, the daughter of James P. Newell and Vera (McPherson) Newell. On Sept. 4, 1949, in Piggott, Ark., she married Keith L. Mills, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1978. On March 4, 1979, she married Rolla B. Pierce, and he survives in rural Bluford.
Mrs. Pierce spent her entire life in Jefferson County. She graduated from Williamsburg Grade School in rural Waltonville and Waltonville High School, and attended SIU-C. After school she worked a brief time for Holman Ford in Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Pierce was a member of Wells Chapel General Baptist Church in Farrington Township. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years and also was active in the Women’s Missionary Society and served as the church clerk.
In addition to her husband Rolla, she is survived by three sons, Marshall Mills and wife Angie of Bluford, Randy Mills and wife Roxanne of Oakland City, Ind., and Marty Mills and wife Marsha of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Karen Hales and husband John of Bluford and Sharon Mills of Hillsboro; two step-sons: Garry G. Pierce and wife Glendora of Bluford, and Harlan Pierce and wife Terry of Bluford; grandchildren Jarrod Mills and wife Sarah of Bluford, Andrea Frey and husband John of Bluford, Ryan Mills and wife Courtney of Pittsburgh, Penn., Laura Milner and husband Dave of Benton, and Jonathon Mills of Mt. Vernon; step - grandchildren, David Pierce and wife Shanel of Bluford, Darren Pierce and wife Kristine of Mt. Vernon, Brian Pierce and wife Sara of Evansville, Ind., Jason Pierce of Bluford, Erin Morrison and husband Jarod of Ferdinand, Ind., and Allison Werne and husband Adam of Ferdinand, Ind.; a brother, Dean Newell of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Faye Simpson and husband Bill of Gurnee; nine great-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Keith, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Jennifer Lynn Mills and Andy Keith Mills; and three brothers, Orville, Maxey and Tom Newell.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pierce will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with the Rev. Fred Estheimer officiating. Burial will follow in Wells Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Memorials can be made to Wells Chapel Cemetery and will be accepted at the Osborn Funeral Home, P.O.
