Born Thomas Russell Wielt on June 7, 1936, to James Russell and Francis Lucille “Fannie” Wielt in Mt. Vernon, Tom Wielt passed away at 10:45 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2013, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
Tom attended Mt. Vernon Township High School and Southern Illinois University — Carbondale, and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Canter, on June 17, 1956. He worked at E.F. Wielt Plumbing in Mt. Vernon for over 55 years until his retirement in 2009; was Past President of Mt. Vernon Jaycees; Past President of the Egyptian Association of Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors; Past President of the King City Dirt Riders; Past President of Gideon’s International-Jefferson Camp; and Past President of Oakwood Cemetery Association. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge, Meadowbrook Christian Church, where he served as deacon, and he especially enjoyed worship and fellowship with many friends he cherished there. He also loved singing gospel music, woodworking, and the St. Louis Cardinals. His family and grandkids were a very important part of his life and a source of joy and happiness to him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Wielt of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Kathy Burgin of Shepherdsville, Ky.; twin sons, Russ Wielt and wife Monica and Jeff Wielt and wife Angie all of Mt. Vernon; six grandsons, Logan Wielt and wife Bailey of Bluford, Chance Klebba and wife Chelsea of Mt. Vernon, Jake Burgin, Bardstown, Ky., Parker Wielt and Ethan Wielt of Mt. Vernon, and Joseph Wielt of Bluford.; three granddaughters, Amy Bray and husband Paul of Mt. Washington, Ky., Shelby Burgin, of Shepherdsville, Ky., and Mica Klebba of Mt. Vernon; and one great-grandchild, Hunter Bray of Mt. Washington, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gary Wielt; one daughter, Tammy Klebba, and one sister-in-law, Yvonne Barbieri.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home with Mike Sheets officiating.
Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
