Ben S. Martin, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Saturday, Sept. 16, 1922, in Sims, son of Benjamin S. and Nancy K. (Smith) Martin. He married Mavis Lee Teel on Jan. 1, 1943, in St. Louis, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 2003.
Ben was a World War II veteran, serving with the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a technician for Illinois Bell Telephone Company from 1941 until retiring in 1966. He owned and operated Guy Wood Insurance in Mt. Vernon from 1966 to 1992 and was instrumental in forming the Mt. Vernon Community College (later to become Rend Lake College). He was past president and served on the board of the Mt. Vernon Township High School from 1959 to 1971 and was past president of the Jefferson County Shrine Club. He was a lifetime member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon and was a lifelong fan and member of the Die-Hard Cub Fan Club.
He is survived by son Randy Martin of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Mallory Moddelmog and husband Chris of Fort Collins, Colo., Quinn McClure and wife Amanda of Mt. Vernon, Kyle McClure of Murray, Ky. and Hilary Brooke Martin of St. Louis; four great-grandchildren, Mia and Emma Grace Moddelmog and Colin and Trevor McClure; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two daughters, Nancy Martin and Cheryl McClure; sister, Bernice Martin; and two brothers, Owen and Bailey Martin.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Jimmy Bledsoe officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
In honor of his wishes, there will be no visitation.
