MT. VERNON —
Cathryn Estes Shumaker, 84, of Olin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15,
2013, at the Gordon Hospice House. She was born Sept. 2, 1928 in Centralia and was the daughter of the late Harel R. Estes and Laura Elizabeth Davis
Estes, of Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Shumaker attended Mt. Vernon Township High School and on June 26,
1998, she married Rufus Bill Shumaker, Sr., who survives.
She was retired from AT&T in 1990 and is a life member of Telephone Pioneers. She was also a member of the VFW and Pla-More Lanes Senior Bowling League and was senior bowler of the year.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a brother, Glenn
(Bud) Estes, of Belmont, Miss., and a son, Scott Thornton.
Along with her husband she is survived by her children, Terry V. Estes
(Kathy) of North Carolina, Carol McNeal of Georgia, Mamie Webb (Jim) of
Mississippi, Marion Morris of Illinois and Connie Blasen (Keith) of
Georgia. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; two cousins, Wanda
Cohoon (Chuck) of Illinois and Karl Marvin Powers (Evelyn) of Illinois; 26
great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Barbara Shumaker of Arizona and
Kathy Shumaker of North Carolina; and a stepson, Billy Shumaker, Jr., of
North Carolina. She is further survived by five step-grandchildren and 12
step-great-grandchildren along with a life long best friend, Betty Frazier
of Mt. Vernon.
A graveside service was conducted Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 2:30 p.m.
at Iredell Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Allan Lunsford officiating. The family visited with friends from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral
