Darrell Gene Frick, age 59, of Woodlawn, passed away 4:37 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Darrell was born March 19, 1953, in Bonnie, a son of Marlin Gene and Joann (Lappin) Frick. He married Joyce (Bumpus) on April 1, 1978; she survives in Woodlawn.
Darrell served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam. He was a member of the Appaloosa Horse Club, American Quarter Horse Association and was a lifetime horse breeder and trainer. He was a member of the Cowboys for Christ and the UMWA. Darrell worked as a ferrier all over Southern Illinois.
He is survived by his parents, Marlin Gene and Joann (Lappin) Frick of Bonnie; his wife, Joyce Frick of Woodlawn; two sons, Jacob Gene Frick of Woodlawn and wife Jennifer of Woodlawn and Joshua Frick of Carterville; two daughters, Jordan Frick of St. Peters, Mo., and Jonah Frick and fiance Patton Prince of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Isabell Paige Frick and Tyson Gene-Vance Frick both of Woodlawn, Macie Elaine Prince and Priya Evelyn Prince, both of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Sherry Frick of Mt. Vernon; a sister-in-law, Mindy Koch; and five nephews.
As per Darrell's wish, no public services will be held. A military flag presentation ceremony will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Newell Funeral Home, 2707 North St., Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
