Margie Hosick

MT. VERNON — — Margie Elaine Hosick, 83, passed away Feb. 27, 2013, in Rockford, where she had been a resident for the past few years. Margie was born July 25, 1929, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Margaret Pace Bullock and Arthur George Bullock. She was a member of the sixth generation of Bullocks living in Jefferson County and a descendant of Samuel Bullock, who moved to Jefferson County in 1828.

On Feb. 3, 1951, she married Earle Wesley Hosick and celebrated 46 years of marriage before he passed away in 1997. She was close to Earle’s mother, Carrie Houston Hosick, whom she called “Mother Hosick” and his aunt, Marion Houston. In their marriage, they enjoyed meeting friends at good restaurants, playing pinochle, camping, picnicking at Lake Seamore and traveling.  Margie and Earle were longtime members of Logan Street and First Baptist Churches in Mt. Vernon.

Margie is survived by two of her brothers, James (Diane) Bullock, of Concord, Calif. and Everett (Ann Roane) Bullock, of Spring Green, Wis.; seven nieces and nephews, Michael, Brian, Debbie, Julie, Marnie, Jill and Joel; as well as several great- and great-great nieces and nephews.  Jetaime, one of her great-nieces, is glad she was old enough and lived close enough to have known Aunt Margie. She wishes all her cousins had been that fortunate. Margie is further survived by her lifelong friend Jean Estes King.

Margie loved the children of her family and friends (especially the Payne, Large, Estes and Mitchell kids) and enjoyed them regardless of their age. Children lucky enough to be in her orbit got attention and affection in good measure.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earle; and her brother, Arthur Max Bullock.

Margie started her working career at age 14, at the American Laundry. During the school year, she walked to Mt Vernon High School, then to work and then home, which was in the woods northwest of West Salem Methodist Church. After a long career as an executive secretary, she retired from General Tire. When she began working, manual typewriters were standard office equipment and her typing and shorthand skill and speed were impressive. By the time she retired, she had become proficient in computer use.

Margie was always interested in learning and was a member of the National Honor Society in high school. As an adult she obtained her Associate’s Degree from Rend Lake College and a few years later, her Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Illinois University. She was an avid reader from the time she was a girl, particularly enjoying British mysteries and could absolutely disappear into a book for hours. She also had a deep appreciation for the elements of design and style, and had “a good eye.” In later years, she pursued the hobbies of writing poetry and painting (water color and oil), especially enjoying the interplay of color.

The family wishes to extend its thanks to her caretakers at the ASTA Care Center of Rockford. Their persistent and heartfelt care was appreciated by Margie and her family.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 4, at Anderson Smith Cemetery just off the Log Cabin Road, southeast of Mt. Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Salem Cemetery:  107 Mockingbird Lane, Woodlawn, IL  62898, or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Hughey Funeral Home where you may call 242-3348 or visit www.hugheyfuneralhome1969.com for further information and to send condolences.
