MT. VERNON — John Howard Ellis, 65, of Keenes, died Friday, July 23, 2010, at 8:45 a.m. at his home.

He was born in Johnsonville on June 26, 1945, the son of Hubert and Mary Ozment Ellis. On Aug. 13, 1970, in Iuka, he married Linda Beard, and she survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Rose Ann Quandt and husband Larry of Iuka; two sons, Bill Ellis and wife Brandi of Keenes and Chris Ellis of Cisne; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ted Ellis and wife Brenda of Effingham; and three sisters, Carolyn Mahnke and husband Ron of Festus, Mo., Marie Wicklein and husband Lyle of Peoria and Laura Henson and husband Dale of Cisne.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Kaufman.

Mr. Ellis was retired from Quebcor World Color and Papertown Ag. He was also a farmer and former oil field worker.

He attended Mills Grade School, Orchardville Grade School, Wayne County High School, Rend Lake College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

John was on the Board of Trustees of Garrison Temple Church and Bradford Cemetery in Hickory Hill Township. He was an avid bird hunter and enjoyed hunting with his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Garrison Temple Church in rural Keenes with Pastor Mark Shell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix.

    Willie J. "Bill"  Ellis, 85, of Du Quoin and a former resident of Mt. Vernon died 1:45 a.m. Wednesday,  Feb. 8, 2012 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
    Willie was born September 5, 1926  in Lilbourn, Missouri, the son of John E. and Alice Myrtle (Hicks) Ellis. He first married Edna M. (Crunk) on Sept. 3, 1951 in Piggott, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1990. He later married Lorene (Porro) O'Rourke on Feb. 14, 1993, in Du Quoin,  IL. She survives in Du Quoin.

    She was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Jefferson County, the daughter of George W. and Emma Jane (Page) Capps. She married Harry Payne May 29, 1933; he preceded her in death May 11, 1977.

    Vera M. Gilliam, 93, of West Frankfort, died 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at West Side Rehabilitation and Care Center in West Frankfort.
    She was born Monday, Oct. 14, 1918, in Benton, the daughter of Jarvis and Callie (Harris) O’Neal. She married Russell A. wicks on Feb. 22, 1942; he preceded her in death July 7, 1979. She married Myron Dale Gilliam on Nov. 11, 1980; he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2011.
