MT. VERNON —
Elmo Gene Wells, 72, of Sebring, Fla., formerly of Mt. Vernon, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Hope Hospice in Sebring.
He was born Friday, Jan. 21, 1938, in Mount Erie, the son of Fred Herschel and Ella (Van Fossan) Wells. He married Phyllis Hunt on April 28, 1967, in Villa Grove, and she survives.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Bruce Gordan oficiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Cemetery in Mount Erie.
Elmo is survived by his wife; three sons, Jett Wells and wife Kathy of Danville, Ind., Neil Huffman and wife Jill of Canby, Ore. and Scott Wells and wife Ann of Brownsburg, Ind.; a daughter, Barbara Birk and husband Eric of Sellersburg, Ind.; a brother, Charles Wells and wife Pauline of Mount Erie; and four sisters, Dorothy Billington and husband Osie of Olney, Bernice Wood and husband Willard of Fairfield, Anna Fern Massie of Carmi and Mary Frye of Cisne. 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Jeff Wells; and two brothers.
Elmo worked for Trunkline Gas Company and Panhandle Eastern Pipeline for 36 years. He also worked as a corrosion engineer as an independent consultant service for the past 12 years. He was respected and revered by those who knew him. He was an avid sports fan and loved fishing with his family and friends. He was proud of his family.
