David Schreiber, 64, of Mt. Vernon, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Friday, Feb. 18, 1949, in Watseka, son of Gilbert and Mary Ann (Weakley) Schreiber. He married Deonna "Dee" Melton on June 10, 1978, in Huntington, Tenn.
David served as an MP during the Vietnam Era and was a truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Deonna "Dee" Schreiber of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Davina Overbey and husband Brad of Mt. Vernon; son, Artie Highfill of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Tammy Melvin and husband Johnny of DuQuoin; daugher, Lee Ann Smith of Encino, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Nicholas Tobin of Encino, Calif., Trent, Tyler and Trevor Barber of Mt. Vernon, Tylyn and Luther Highfill of Mt. Vernon and Rayleigh and Braxton Overbey of Mt. Vernon; three great-grandchildren, Ellee Barber of Mt. Vernon and Liam and Andrew Tobin of Encino, Calif.; brother, James Schreiber of Gilman; two sisters, Janice Clark of Gilman and Mary Jane Fregeau and husband Dave of Bradley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sharon Adams; and grandson, Sergeant Andrew Tobin.
In honor of his wishes, he was cremated and a memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon with Father John Iffert officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with full military honors conducted by members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
