ROCHELLE — James Leroy Smith, 88, of Rochelle, passed away on June 14, 2010, at his home.  

He was born on July 25, 1921, in Mt. Vernon, the son of John B. and Ruth G. (Allen) Smith. He was married to M. Irene McKiness on July 13, 1939, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in St. Louis. They enjoyed 70 wonderful years of marriage together.

James worked as a welder for Mt. Vernon Car Shop in Mt. Vernon for 14 years and as a welder for Patten Industries in Elmhurst for 33 years.  He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in DeKalb.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of Rochelle,; three daughters, Sonja (George) Grosboll of La Grange, Betty (Lawrence Vergamini) Lawrence of Bolingbrook, and Barbara (Dale) Male of Malta; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren;  a brother, Robert (Velma) Smith of Keene, Texas; a sister, Martha Brown of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jimmy L. Smith; and two sisters, Ruby Fisher and Mildred Wade.

Graveside services will be held at New Shiloh Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Joseph Gresham officiating.
