MT. VERNON —
Herbert Mayes Bicknell, 80, of Mt. Vernon, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Aug. 6, 1932, in Lovington, the son of Herbert P. and Dorothy (Mayes) Bicknell. He married Sarah Lou Wilson on Feb. 17, 1978, and she survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bicknell is survived by three daughters, Sarah Petz and husband Merle of Olathe, Kan., Melissa “MIssy” Cootway and husband Brian of Cincinnati, and Amy Petrovich and husband Justin of Carlinville; a son, Danny Bicknell and wife Dawn of Minnetonka, Minn.; grandchildren, Austin Mayes Petz, Maggie, Jack and Grace Petz of Olathe, Kan., Adam and Dylan Cootway of Cincinnati, and Jacob and Anna Petrovich of Carlinville; and a brother, Joe Bicknell and wife Annamary of Lovington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Hixon and Nancy Hulett.
Mr. Bicknell served our country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He worked as an insurance agent for Country Financial for 38 years.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Andy Clark officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
For those who wish, memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, American Lung Association or Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, and they will be accepted at the funeral home.
