Jack Dwight Riley, 86, of Dix, went home to glory at 7:01 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon after a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 4, 1926, the son of Claude William and Mabel Agnes (Price) Riley.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Beth (Schwengel) Riley; sons Douglas and Gregory Riley, Quinton Schwengel and wife Ramona; daughters Jacquelyn Riley Vizcarra and husband Leonzo, and Debora Reich and husband Dean; and 14 grandchildren, Justin Riley and wife Mindy, Spring Bonney and husband Darrin, Sean, Brandon, and Tyler Riley, Coleman, Austen, Jacob, and Luke Vizcarra, Hannah McElroy and husband Stephen, Zachariah, Isaac, and Wyatt Reich. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; brother Edwin Riley and wife Sara; sisters Helen Ellis and husband Bill and Jean Hilger and husband Earl.
Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the second World War and was a rural letter carrier in Dix from 1947 to 1982. He then drove a school bus for Rome Grade School for 18 years, retiring in 2004. He also served on the Dix Bank board from 1985 to 2011 and on the Dix Village Board for two terms. In 2006, he was named Illinois State Tree Farmer of the year. For 84 years, he attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was well known for his service there. He enjoyed working outdoors, farming, planting and cutting trees, gardening, and working on machinery. He was also adept at inventing and creating solutions and enjoyed welding. Jack generously offered help to others in all these areas whenever he had an opportunity.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Irene Riley and Eula (Riley) Carter, and brother-in-law John Carter.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, with the Rev. Jack Lucas officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
