Samuel D. Austin, 95, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, in Mt. Vernon.
Samuel was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Keenes, the son of David L. and Lydia (McKinney) Austin. Sam served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was a member of the West Side Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Kay Hudson of Winder, Ga. and Phyllis and husband Phil Richardson of Snellville, Ga.; many grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepsons, Orville Flowers and wife Ella and Allen Flowers; stepdaughter-in-law, Cindy Pugh who he lived with; one stepdaughter, Marilyn and husband Dale Mellott; and several nieces and nephews.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mable Tyler Austin; second wife, June (Pugh) Austin; one son, Sammie N. Austin; stepson, Gary Pugh; sisters, Pearl Weedman, Nelley Jackson, Stella Dickey and Freda Wright; one brother, Earl Pete Austin; stepdaughter, Alice Flowers; and stepgrandson, Donny Fuller.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City with the Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Military flag presentation will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.
