Arthur Merriam

MT. VERNON — — Arthur M. Merriam, 77, of Mt. Vernon, died 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Wednesday, April 11, 1934, in Pasadena, Calif., the son of Francis and Betty (Roberts) Merriam. He married Lois Virginia Leinard on Jan. 23, 1954, in Pomona, Calif.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Jeff Merriam and wife Connie of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Michele Smith and husband Matthew of Mt. Vernon and Jennifer Merriam and Alex Merriam of Mt. Vernon; great-granddaughter, Madelynn Smith of Mt. Vernon; and nephews, Francis Orsbon and wife Debbie of Greenbrier, Tenn. and Art Orsbon and wife Penny of Greenbrier, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Orsbon; and brother-in-law, Bill Orsbon.

Arthur was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War who served as a Damage Controlman and Fireman aboard the Klondike-class destroyer tender, USS Frontier (AD-25). He was a carpenter and worked as a machinist at Joy Manufacturing in Mt. Vernon for 34 years until retiring. He was a member of Campground Baptist Church, the Illinois Baptist Search and Rescue Team and he loved golf and fishing.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Benton Fitzjerrells and Chaplain Dan Lovin officiating. Interment will be at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. The Chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation at the cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Illinois Baptist State Association Disaster Relief and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
