MT. VERNON — —
Berniece Backensto, 87, of Mt. Vernon, died at 2 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Bonnie, the daughter of Don Carlos Cates and Jewell Burchell (Book) Cates. She married John E. Backensto on Sept. 13, 1946, in Johnston City; he survives in Mt. Vernon.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Timothy Backensto of Wheeling; two granddaughters, Jennifer Backensto Henegghan and husband Mike of Lombard and Heather Backensto-Jamriska and husband Derek of Broadview; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Jamriska and Walter Henegghan.
Berniece worked in the credit department for Montgomery Ward, the Mammoth department store and Featherstun's Appliance in Mt. Vernon for 20 years and later worked dispatch at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital for six years and was a member of Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon and the Senior Circle.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 2, 2013, at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with J. Howard Kraps officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery.
In honor of her wishes, there will be no visitation.
For those who wish, memorials may be given to the donor's choice and will be accepted at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
