Ruth Marjorie Shurtz, 92, of Mt. Vernon, left this earth to be with the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.
Ruth was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Waltonville, the daughter of Krekel Martin and Nellie (Shelton) Martin who both preceded her in death. She had one brother, Leo Martin, who also preceded her in death. She married Max W. Shurtz on Dec. 23, 1941, and they shared 70 years of marriage until his death on June 22, 2011.
Ruth is survived by two children, Judy Waligorski and husband Wayne of Cincinnati and James Shurtz and special friend Paralee Scrivner of Mt. Vernon. Survivors also include two granddaughters, Sara Fiedler and husband Chad of Cincinnati and Laura Waligorski of Charleston, S.C. Ruth got much joy from her only great-grandson, Zachary Fiedler of Cincinnati.
Ruth was born and raised in Waltonville where she taught grade school for 28 years. She was the Waltonville High School Alumni of the Year in 2003. She was a member of the Jefferson County Homemakers Association and the United Methodist Church of Waltonville where she played the piano for many years.
A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville with Pastor Ron Reynolds officiating. A time of gathering for family and friends will be from noon until service time at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Knob Prairie Cemetery, and will be accepted at the Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
