Mary Ellen (Watts) Dodson, 90, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 4:22 a.m., Sunday, April 22, 2012, at GreenTree Assisted Living and Memory Care of Mt. Vernon.
Mary Ellen Watts was born in Monticello on Jan. 17, 1922, a daughter of Lloyd and Frankie (Hoyt) Watts. She grew up in Bluford and graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School. She married Sterling Dodson on Aug. 8, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo., and Sterling preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2002.
Mary Ellen first worked at the newly-opened Granada Theater as one of the original female usherettes in uniform, a prestigious job at the time. She worked devotedly to care for her family upon her marriage and continued loving dedication to them throughout her lifetime.
She will be remembered best as a devoted daughter, a beloved wife of Sterling, a mother of four, a grandmother of thirteen, a great-grandmother of eight and as a sister, a cousin, a niece and a friend to many.
Mrs. Dodson is survived by two sons, Barry Dodson and wife Susan (Greathouse) of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Monty Dodson and wife Pamela (Kent) of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Sheila (Dodson) Baker and husband Norman of DeLand, Fla. and Lisa (Dodson) Jones and husband Cort of Mt. Vernon; granddaughters, Rachel (Dodson) Vancil and husband Gary of Poteau, Okla., Bhree (Dodson) Barrett and husband William of Tulsa, Okla., Betsy (Dodson) Smith and husband Matt of Colorado Springs, Colo., Belinda (Baker) Anderson and husband Justin of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Angela Baker of Deland, Fla. and Charity (Jones) Lantagne and husband Shawn of Carterville; grandsons, Blake Baker and wife Sonja (Jackson) of Deland, Fla., Andrew Dodson and wife Michelle (Patton) of Orion, Bart Dodson and wife Melissa (Ware) of TegucigaJpa, Honduras, Joshua Jones of Los Angeles, Calif., Brett Baker of DeLand, Fla. and Blair Dodson and Carisa (Rodgers) of Westminster, Colo.; five great-grandsons, Josiah and Drew Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tristan Vancil of Poteau, Okla., Colton Baker of Deland, Fla. and Marek Sterling Anderson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three great-granddaughters, Eden Anderson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Parker Dodson of Westminster, Colo. and Sadie Lantagne of Carterville; and three nieces, Jane (Watts) Clark and husband Ron and family of North Potomac, Md., Joy (Watts) Reed and husband Michael and family of Wilton, Calif. and Janet (Kissel) Bailey and husband Bob and family of Wayne City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Frankie Watts; her grandson, Monty Nevin Dodson; her husband, Sterling Dodson; her sister, Beulah Ferne (Watts) Kissel; and her two brothers, Herbert Watts and Keith Watts.
Mary Ellen was of the Baptist faith (a Christian) and a member of the Mt. Vernon First Free Will Baptist Church for 50 plus years. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and served in the Women's Auxiliary.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Shores officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Evening visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Morning visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.
