Judith York

MT. VERNON — Dr. Judith A. York, 69, of Mt. Vernon, died 8:56 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at St. Mary Health Center in St. Louis.

She was born Sunday, March 10, 1943, in Chicago, the daughter of Henry and Violet (Hedegard) Johnson. She was first married to Jere Shaw. She married Charlie York on Aug. 2, 1975, in Mt. Vernon; he survives in Mt. Vernon.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jeff Shaw and wife Lydia of Mt. Vernon and Jeret Lee Shaw and wife Leann of Mt. Vernon; a step daughter, Ann Ashby of Centralia; a step son, Rusty York and wife Karen of Denton, Texas; grandchildren, Codi, Courtney, Cade, Gregory, Jessica, Alexa, Kyle and Justin; two great-grandchildren, Presleigh and Maelynn; a brother, Bill Johnson and wife Nancy of Countryside; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Judii began her career in education as a special education teacher. She became director of the special education department and later principal for Mt. Vernon City Schools, District 80. Following that she was principal of Lincoln School, principal of Hall School, was teacher and administrator through the Central Office of Education of District 80 until retiring in 1994 after 23 years of service. She was recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education as an outstanding educator and was past president of the District 80 Foundation, past president for the Mt. Vernon Junior Women’s Club, past information chairperson for Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, was awarded Senior Saint in 2010 and was a member of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, the Ladies of Mt. Vernon Elks BPOE Lodge 819 and member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Victor Long officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
