Opal Faye Rector, 95, of Mt. Vernon, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at White Oaks Care Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Sunday, Jan. 7, 1917, in Waltonville, daughter of John and Lula (Newbury) Bushong. She married Thurman G. Rector on Nov. 18, 1933, in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1995.
Opal was a sales clerk for P.N. Hirsch Illinois brokerage company for 20 years and then for 12 years at Jackson Jewelry. She was a wonderful cook, wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was proud of all her grandchildren and never believed she would live long enough to see her great-great-granddaughter, Za’Niah born, who she loved and enjoyed very much. Opal never met a stranger. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and sang in the choir for 15 years and also helped with youth groups and she attended Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by daughter, Glenda Faye Johnson and husband Larry of Mt. Vernon; granddaughter, Lynda Elinor and husband Simon of Clarksville, Tenn.; great-granddaughter, Mallorie Ratliff and Derez Edwards of Mt. Vernon; three great-grandsons, Jeremy, John and Josh Hatch of Clarksville, Tenn.; great-great-granddaughter, Za’Niah Edwards of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Evelyn Nordin and Dave Capps of Mt. Vernon and Ruth Hults of Florida; other special family members, Jeanie Hale and Terry of Waltonville, Ruth Ann and Ron Krueger of North Carolina, Carolyn Bushong and Allen of Denver, Andy Graven and Sheli and their children, Hailey and Mariah Graven of Decatur, Ryan Prince and Tammy and their son Gentry of Decatur, Amanda and Brandon Hale of Mt. Vernon, Ida Miller of Mt. Vernon, Nellie Ratliff of Mt. Vernon and Natalie Dennis of Mt. Vernon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son, Glenn Melvin Rector; grandson, Roger Ratliff; two sisters, Lela and Hazel; six brothers, Raymond, Kenneth, Arthur (in infancy), Virgil, Joseph and William Bushong; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Bushong.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Randy Sells officiating. Interment will be at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
