Ervin Schultz

MT. VERNON — — Ervin O. Schultz, 83, of Ashley, died at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, in Mt. Vernon.

He was born June 9, 1929, in Ashley, the son of Fred and Eula (Baldridge) Schultz. He married Marjorie (Dycus) Schmidt on Jan. 6, 1956, in Waltonville and she preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2010.

Ervin was a graduate of Woodlawn Grade School and Woodlawn High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was employed by the L&N Railroad for 20 years until retiring. He was a farmer and an oil man owning and operating S.M. Drilling in Ashley and he also worked for N.A. Baldridge Drilling Company of Ashley. He was a longtime member and current President of the Ashley Sportsman’s Club, a member of the Mt. Zion Cemetery board, the Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge 755 (L.O.O.M.), the Mt. Vernon Lodge 31 A.F. & A.M., the Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis, the Jefferson County Shrine Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376, the American Legion Post 1193 of Bluford and the Ashley Methodist Church. He loved bowling, farming, raising livestock, drilling oils wells, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by stepson, Don Schmidt and wife Katie of Missouri; sisters, Helen Hyde of Mt. Vernon, Velma Patterson and husband Herb of Mt. Vernon, Imogene Walker of Union, Mo., Leora Price of Benton and Janice Miller of Wood River; brother, Fred Schultz, Jr. of Tamaroa; aunt, Adeline Moore of Centralia; longtime special friend and caregiver, Phyllis Foutch of Ashley; best friend, Wayne Wilson of Ashley; two stepgranddaughters; four stepgreat-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Darrin Dycus of Carbondale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 54 years, Marjorie; brother, Charles Shultz; uncles, Neal Baldridge, Ernest “Slim” Baldridge and Joe Baldridge; and aunt, Leota Baldridge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with a Shrine walk though service commencing at 7 p.m.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Mt. Zion Cemetery or to the Ashley Sportsman’s Club and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
