MT. VERNON —
Kay (Michel) Kleinsmith Delgado passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010, in Little Rock, Ark., after a two-year struggle with multiple myeloma cancer.
She was born Kay Michel in Springfield, Mo., on Aug. 20, 1955. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and her master’s degree at Northern Arizona University. She was a teacher for more than 20 years, primarily within the Scottsdale Unified School District. She was a board member of The Weldon House, a shelter program for recovering women in the Phoenix area and was a member of Paradise Valley Republican Women.
Kay’s life was devoted to her husband David and her unswerving priority was the care and nurturing of her daughters, Lesley and Abbey, who regard their mama as their best friend. Kay loved her extended family, her core group of lifelong friends, the children she taught and the colleagues that she worked with. She had strong connections with all the students and parents she was involved with and always strived to instruct with a fun, unique approach.
Kay was passionate about fashion, cooking and entertaining, loved to travel and experience new places and people. She had a wide circle of friends with whom she shared her interests and wisdom. She was spiritual, vivacious, engaging and had an unforgettable smile and laugh that brought joy to everyone’s heart. Kay was filled with unrelenting energy and always made time to pay attention to those who needed her, even as she bravely battled her fight with cancer.
Kay was preceded in death by her brother Scott Wilson Michel and her mother Catherine Wilson Michel.
She is survived by her daughters, Lesley-Kay Schwanke and Abigayle Elizabeth Kleinsmith; her husband David Delgado; her father Caryle Michel; her sisters Starr Potter and Teri Kerrek and husband David; and her brother Christopher Michel and wife Pam.
