Floyd J. Phelps, 65, of Bonnie, entered his heavenly home at 2:36 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009, at St. Mary Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Nov. 24, 1923, in Jefferson County, son of George Phelps and May Rice. He married Imogene Minor on April 14, 1946, in Mt. Vernon and she survives in Bonnie.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Phelps is survived by a son, Stanley Phelps of Bonnie; two daughters, Rita Williams and husband Roger of Bonnie and Cheryl Tisdale and husband Fred of Potterville, Mich.; two sister-in-laws, Ruth Ann Delaney and Hilda Phelps, both of Mt. Vernon; seven grandchildren, Traci Batson and husband Jason of Maryville, Alison Storm and husband Brandon of Fairview Heights, Kristen Cherry and husband Matt of Nashville, Tenn., Amber Dawn Phelps of Cleveland, Tenn., Alan Phelps of Mt. Vernon, Bryan Tisdale and wife Gennifer of Mt. Vernon and Tegan Hart and husband Adam of Opdyke; and eight great-grandchildren, Adriana Patton, Dalton Hart, Ireland Hart, Dreydyn Hart, Gabriel Tisdale, Colin Tisdale, Camden Storm and Ashlyn Storm.
His parents; four brothers, William Earl Phelps, Elvin “Buck” Phelps, Harold A. Phelps and an infant brother; a sister, Nebraska Jane Phelps; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Phelps, preceded him in death.
Floyd loved his Lord and Savior. He loved his wife of 63 years and they believed God brought them together. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, golfing, fishing and traveling with friends. He was proud of his service to his country as a Sergeant in the Marine Air Force and served at Peleliu in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Floyd had a great passion and love for his kids and grandkids. He was a Sunday school director and taught class at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Floyd retired from the Marion Federal Penitentiary as a garage foreman. He was previously employed as a mechanic in various Mt. Vernon garages for 18 years and also engaged in farming.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Larry Gowler officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with a military flag presentation conducted by American Legion Post 141.
